Interim Superintendent For Detroit Catholic Schools
Archbishop Allen Vigneron made the appointment, effective immediately, at the recommendation of a search committee for the archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools.
Young, 45, brings several years of education experience to the position, serving since 2010 as associate superintendent overseeing schools in the archdiocese’s Central Region, which encompasses the city of Detroit and parts of Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, Highland Park and Redford. She also spent eight years as assistant principal at University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, from 2000 to 2007.
“I am humbled and honored that the archbishop appointed me as interim superintendent,” Young said. “I look forward to continuing the good work we are doing for the benefit of children in our Catholic schools. Our schools build strong values and encourage academic excellence, and I am grateful to be an integral part of this as an educational leader.”
Young takes over on an interim basis for Bernadette Sugrue, who retired as schools superintendent June 27 after a 38-year career in education.
“Kim brings a wealth of experience and educational leadership,” said Dr. Margie Crooks, director of the archdiocesan Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools. “Please keep Kim in your prayers as she assumes this new responsibility.”
Young has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wayne State University. She is a graduate of Bishop Foley High School (’85) in Madison Heights and attended St. Dennis grade school in Royal Oak. She is now a member of National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish in Royal Oak.
