Abp Vigneron available to discuss late Cd Szoka

Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will be available this afternoon, Thursday, August 21, to speak with members of the news media on the passing of Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka. The media availability will be at at 2:30 PM at the offices of the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 9844 Woodward Ave. in Detroit. The offices are at the rear of the church building, with the entrance just off the parking lot."We mourn the loss of a dedicated shepherd," said Archbishop Vigneron, in a statement this morning. "For sixty years Cardinal Szoka gave himself totally to his priestly service of Christ and his Church. He has gone home to the Heavenly Father with our prayers. May the Lord give him the reward of his labors."The Archdiocese of Detroit this morning shared word of Cardinal Szoka's death. Cardinal Szoka, 86, had served as Archbishop of Detroit from 1981 until 1990, and had later overseen governance of the Vatican city state under both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. He had been living in Northville following his retirement from active ministry in 2006. n/a
