UDM to award $20000 and $10000 Catholic Education University Grants to Catholic School Graduates
University of Detroit Mercy, in partnership with the Archdiocese of Detroit, will award a new Catholic Education University Grant of $5,000 annually for four years to qualified graduating seniors who enroll at UDM and attended Catholic schools from first grade through high school. University of Detroit Mercy and the Archdiocese of Detroit made the announcement this morning at the university’s campus.
Students who attended and graduated from a Catholic high school and enroll at UDM will receive a $2,500 annual Catholic Education University Grant for four years.
“University of Detroit Mercy is excited to support the Archdiocese of Detroit Catholic Schools with these new university grants because they will help students to continue their Catholic education for four more years,” said UDM President, Dr. Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D.
The respective grants of $20,000 and $10,000 will be available to first-time, full-time students entering UDM in the fall term of 2015.
“Several months ago, Dr. Garibaldi and I began a discussion that centered on developing a partnership that would promote the availability and affordability of a Catholic education for students from first grade through a bachelor’s degree,” explained Dr. Brian M. DoughertySuperintendent of the Archdiocese of Detroit schools.
“The Archdiocese and University of Detroit Mercy have been providing formation and educational opportunities for our students independently for many years. Today we join together to announce a partnership that will recognize and reward the commitment our parents have made in choosing Catholic elementary and secondary schools for their children. The University’s commitment of $20,000 for four years for any student completing an entire Catholic school education within the Archdiocese of Detroit increases the possibility that we will retain the brightest students in the region for the communities they may choose to live and work,” he added.
University of Detroit Mercy is Michigan’s largest, private Catholic University with more than 100 academic majors and programs. Sponsored by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and the Sisters of Mercy, the University has campuses located in downtown and northwest Detroit.
