The Michigan Catholic wins two national Catholic press awards

Release Date: 6/26/14

The Michigan Catholic, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Detroit, has been awarded two honors by the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada.

In its annual awards process, the CPA named The Michigan Catholic the second-best Catholic newspaper of its size (circulation between 17,000 and 40,000) in North America by awarding it Second Place in “General Excellence.” The judges wrote that the newspaper was awarded for exhibiting “careful balance of international and regional and local news important to a diverse Catholic population,” and “excellent layout of an abundance of content.”

Additionally — in tribute both to the career of the recently retired staff reporter Robert Delaney and current managing editor Michael Stechschulte — the CPA awarded The Michigan Catholic First Place for the Best Personality Profile for the story “Longtime Michigan Catholic reporter putting down the pen,” which was written by Stechschulte upon Delaney’s retirement in May 2013. Of the article, the judges wrote, “Subject’s love for reporting, facts, humor and more are revealed through great attention to detail and use of language.”

The Michigan Catholic, which is published bi-weekly, has been the official newspaper of the Church of Detroit for 142 years. This spring, the newspaper further enhanced its content and online offerings. For details or a subscription, visit www.themichigancatholic.com or call the circulation department at 313-224-8003.
