Holy See accepts retirement of Bishop Francis Reiss

This morning, the Holy See announced that Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Francis R. Reiss. Today, Bishop Reiss turns 75, the age limit at which Church law mandates that each bishop submit his resignation.

Bishop Reiss, a Hamtramck native, was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Detroit on June 4, 1966, and was ordained an auxiliary — or assistant — bishop for the Detroit Archdiocese on August 12, 2003. Most recently, Bishop Reiss has served as the regional moderator for the South Region of the Archdiocese of Detroit, assisting Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron in pastoral oversight of the region’s parishes and schools. The South Region entails western Wayne County and all of Monroe County.

Bishop Reiss will continue his duties as regional moderator until another provision is made. The Archdiocese of Detroit has three other active auxiliary bishops, Bishop Michael J. Byrnes, Bishop J.
