Statement Regarding 2017 Hurricane Season Relief
In a series of violent late summer storms, hurricane-force winds, accompanied by tropical storm rains, flooding and surges, have wrought significant destruction and displacement on the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana, in the Eastern Caribbean and Puerto Rico, and have the potential to do significant damage from Florida to the Carolinas.
At the request of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Vigneron has asked all parishes to consider taking up a special collection at Masses on the weekend of September 16 and 17 to support relief efforts. Funds given through this collection will support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA, providing pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted communities.
Parishioners donating by check should make their checks payable to the parish, with “Hurricane Relief” noted in the memo line. Once received by the parish, funds should be deposited into the parish bank account, with a single check then cut from the parish to the Archdiocese of Detroit as follows:
Archdiocese of Detroit – Designated Fund - CollectionsAttn: Accounting12 State StreetDetroit, MI 48226-1823
Please include a notation that the payment is for Hurricane relief. The AOD will forward all funds to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to assist in direct help to dioceses and parishes for church and pastoral use, and to Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), the official domestic relief agency of the US Catholic Church.
