Archdiocese unveils Unleash the Gospel magazine and website
The Archdiocese of Detroit on Wednesday announced a new print magazine and website, each dedicated to nourishing and encouraging area faithful embarking on a mission to “unleash the Gospel” in their communities.
The website, UnleashTheGospel.org, features inspirational content, practical formation and real-life stories from everyday Catholics. An accompanying magazine of the same name – a high-quality, four-color publication – features content available on the website and will be distributed free, six times per year, to 90,000 faithful in the Archdiocese of Detroit – including lay leaders, clergy and those who have supported the mission of the Archdiocese with a gift to the annual Catholic Services Appeal. Set to arrive just before Catholics participate in Holy Week observances, the first issue features stories about a young military widow’s journey of faith, an interview with the Michigan-born Director of the Vatican Observatory, a photo tour of historic Ste. Anne’s Parish in Detroit, and more.
The new magazine and website represent the next step in an archdiocesan-wide movement called "Unleash the Gospel," which calls on Catholics to embrace new identities as joyful missionary disciples of Christ, boldly sharing the Gospel in their communities.
“Our new website and magazine are uplifting and formational resources for people at every stage of the faith journey – from those interested in exploring the faith to those who want to nurture an already solid foundation,” said Edmundo Reyes, executive editor and director of communications at the Archdiocese of Detroit. “We are dedicated to helping all of our readers grow in their relationships with Christ and to boldly share the Good News of Jesus with others.”
In a nod to Detroit’s historic motto, the cover of the Unleash the Gospelmagazine’s inaugural issue features the quote attributed to Father Gabriel Richard, who was pastor of Ste. Anne Parish in Detroit when a massive fire in 1805 destroyed most of the city: “Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus.” The Latin phrase translates to: “We hope for better things; it will rise from the ashes.”
Archbishop of Detroit Allen Vigneron linked the city’s motto to the local Church’s commitment to renewal.
“I have a plaque of this motto on my desk to remind me of hope, renewal and rebirth,” he said. “We too, as the Church in southeast Michigan, hope for better things – not just economic prosperity, but the true renewal that comes with an encounter with Jesus, who is the source of all joy and happiness.”
The magazine will feature content from the website, which replaces a pre-existing site that originally hosted Detroit Archbishop Vigneron’s 2017 pastoral letter. The website joins existing Unleash the Gospel digital media, including social media channels (@UTGDetroit) on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as videos and podcasts. These online efforts provide daily inspiration and encouragement through art, video, photos and personal stories from members of the faith community, sharing how God is working in their lives.
