Reverend Michael Cooney
Father Michael Cooney passed from this life on November 26, 2020 at the age of 72.
Father Cooney was born March 10, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan, and ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit in 1975.
Father Cooney served as Pastor of St. Peter Parish, Mount Clemens; Parochial Vicar of St. Suzanne/Our Lady Gate of Heaven Parish, Detroit; St. Malachy Parish, Sterling Heights; St. Basil the Great Parish, Eastpointe; and National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica Parish, Royal Oak.
While Father Cooney’s cause of death is not yet known, he had been in fragile health for some time and recently was diagnosed with COVID-19.
Visitation for Father Cooney will take place from 1-6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 95 Market St., Mt. Clemens, MI 48043. Father Cooney will lie in repose at St. Peter Church from 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4 until the celebration of his funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Due to the large crowd expected, the funeral Mass will be live-streamed. Details are forthcoming. Father Cooney will be interred at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5 at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 25800 W. 10 Mile Rd., Southfield, MI 48033.
Father Cooney was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Elizabeth Cooney; his brother, Bishop Patrick Cooney; and his sister, Mary Cooney. He is survived by his sister, Sister Leontia Cooney, OP, a retired Adrian Dominican.
