Archdiocese to host Mass In Thanksgiving for Archbishop Emeritus Vigneron, Mass of Installation for Archbishop-designate Weisenburger

The Archdiocese of Detroit will host a Lenten Stational Mass In Thanksgiving for the ministry of Archbishop Emeritus Vigneron on Sunday, March 9 at 11 a.m., followed by a Mass of Installation of Archbishop-designate Weisenburger on Tuesday, March 18 at 2 p.m. Both Masses will be held at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 9844 Woodward Avenue in Detroit.

The Masses come roughly one month after the Feb. 11 announcement that Pope Francis had accepted Archbishop Vigneron's resignation from ministry and appointed Bishop of Tucson Edward J. Weisenburger as the sixth Archbishop of Detroit.

Details regarding media coverage and public attendance of each Mass are as follows:

Lenten Stational Mass In Thanksgiving for the ministry of the Most Reverend Archbishop Emeritus Allen H. Vigneron:

  • Open to the public, with a livestream also available on the Archdiocese of Detroit's YouTube and Facebook pages.
  • Open to media; please contact Michelle St. Pierre at (313) 805-1408 or stpierre.michelle@aod.org to arrange coverage.
  • Archbishop Emeritus Vigneron will have a brief media availability before Mass from 10:15-10:30 a.m. in Conference Room A (follow directions from onsite personnel).
  • Media parking will be available in the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan lot across the street and just north of the Cathedral. (Map)

The Mass of Installation of the Most Reverend Edward J. Weisenburger as Sixth Archbishop of Detroit:

  • Due to space constraints at the Cathedral, and to ensure there is room for Archbishop-designate Weisenburger’s guests, attendance at the Mass is by invitation only. For the public, a livestream will be available on the Archdiocese of Detroit's YouTube and Facebook pages.
  • Open to media; please contact Michelle St. Pierre at (313) 805-1408 or stpierre.michelle@aod.org to arrange coverage.
  • Archbishop-designate Weisenburger will have a brief media availability before Mass from 1-1:15 p.m. in Conference Room A (follow directions from onsite personnel).
  • Media parking will be available in the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan lot across the street and just north of the Cathedral. (Map)
