Cathedral Choir Academy
The Archdiocesan Academy of Sacred Music was formally established by decree of Archbishop Allen Vigneron, on December 5, 2018.
“I, the Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit, in accord with article 46 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium, hereby establish for the Archdiocese of Detroit, a sacred music commission to be know as the Archdiocesan Academy of Sacred Music, as governed by Statues reviewed and approved on this day, 5 December 2018.”
Serving as a consultative body to the Archbishop in the exercise of his pastoral ministry, the mission of the Academy is to support and advance the excellence of ministry (service) which Sacred Music performs in the liturgical life of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The vision, which inspires the Academy’s mission, is articulated in the Dogmatic Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium.
In accordance with the statues, the Academy is comprised of 12 elected members, approved by the Archbishop, including parish and seminary musicians, clergy, and the Archdiocesan Director of Music.
Currently chaired by Dean Susan Lindquist, the Academy strives to support AOD Music Ministers as they work to implement the Archbishop’s Pastoral Letter, Unleash the Gospel. In addition to hosting liturgical music conferences, specialized workshops, and webinars, the Academy offers a host of valuable resources.
- Sacred Music Handbook, a directory on sacred music including recommendations for the 4 GIRM options, musical suggestions for bishop’s station liturgies, and sample liturgy plans.
- Antiphon Project, which posts newly composed settings for antiphon texts in a variety of styles.
- Hiring Tool, a guide for parishes and musicians alike, this HR Document is specific to the hiring of church musicians.
- Cathedral Choir Academy of Detroit, a comprehensive choral music program serving both urban and suburban youth of all faiths, grades 3 - 12, offering three levels of instruction.
“Zeal for the promotion and restoration of the liturgy is rightly held to be a sign of the providential dispositions of God in our time, as a movement of the Holy Spirit in His Church. It is today a distinguishing mark of the Church's life, indeed of the whole tenor of contemporary religious thought and action.” SC Article 43
