As written in the Second Vatican Council's instruction on music in the liturgy, "One cannot find anything more religious and more joyful in sacred celebrations than a whole congregation expressing its faith and devotion in song." (Musicam Sacram 16). The pastoral musician, in cooperation and with the assistance of all the parish ministers, supports the Gospel message through song and challenges the assembly to live their faith more fully.
The pastoral musician is any individual called by their baptismal promises to serve God and community with the gifts they have received to proclaim the kingdom of God.
